All Nebraska Tiger employees are AACCA certified

The American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators has just released a study of catastrophic injuries and emergency room visits for cheerleading and other sports. The results of this study clearly demonstrate that the risk of participation in cheerleading is lower than that of many other sports and that it is more in line with sports such as softball, track and volleyball and not “more dangerous than football” as several recent articles falsely claim.  This matches our anecdotal evidence and what we hear from state associations that govern cheerleading and from insurance organizations that cover cheerleading injuries – that they are no greater than most other sports.

The study also makes recommendations for continued improvement in cheerleading risk management, including required safety training of coaches and some level of regulation by state associations.  If your state athletics or activities association does not require coaches to follow safety rules or have risk management training, we need your help in securing action.  The documented recent success with the NCAA’s requirement for cheer coaches’ training outlined in the study points to a model that will benefit our high school cheerleaders as well.

Increasingly we are working with local school boards that want unified safety training for all of their cheerleading coaches.  We applaud them for taking an active role in improving cheerleading safety and implementing a risk management program involving AACCA. We also work very closely with the National Federation of High School Associations on cheer coaches’ education. We are proud to be a part of the NFHS Coaches Education Program and our safety course is available online now at http://www.nfhslearn.com.

This press release summarizes the study findings: http://www.reuters.com/article/pressRelease/idUS142622+14-Oct-2009+PRN20091014

Feel free to forward it to your school board contacts and cheer coaches. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.
